MVMT (pronounced Movement) is a direct-to-consumer watch and accessory company that solves a problem. It is designed for the millennial market by millennials. If you consider watches to be a fashion accessory and want one that is stylish, sharp-looking, and reasonably priced, you should consider joining the Movement. In addition to various watches, they offer eyewear, jewelry, collector cases, and more. Like many companies these days, they have a cause. MVMT donates 1% of all revenue from their Minimal Sport collection to the Surfrider Foundation, a non-profit organization that works to protect and preserve the planet’s oceans, waves, and beaches.
In this review, we’ll speak about MVMT watches and go over the specifics. While I may not be in their target audience, I have joined the movement and have a MVMT watch. I will be glad to share my personal experience with it, to show you what you can expect. That way, you can see if it is right for you. Let’s take a look at the different aspects now.
How many watches does MVMT (Movement) offer?
At the time of this review, the company offers 127 models for men and 123 models for women. That makes a total of 250 different watch models. Of course, the watches come in a variety of different colors, sizes, functions, and price ranges, depending on what you are looking for. You can also get additional straps available in leather, nylon, and stainless steel to give your watch a specific look or style. We’ll start with face colors, first.
- Men’s Colors – (19 in total) beige, black, blue, bronze, brown, gold, green, grey, gunmetal, navy, nude, orange, red, rose, rose gold, silver, tan, taupe, and white.
- Women’s Colors – (22 in total) beige, black, blue, brown, cream, gold, grey, gunmetal, nude, orange, peach, pearl, pink, purple, rose, rose gold, silver, tan, taupe, titanium, white, and yellow.
Next, you need to consider what size watch you want. Watch sizes are usually measured in case diameter. Men’s sizes for MVMT start at 39mm and go up to 47mm. Women’s sizes range from 24mm to 39mm. If you are trying to be stylish, it is important to get the right size for your wrist. Otherwise, you may draw attention to yourself. Whereas oversized watches were popular in the past, they may not be the statement you want to make.
How much do MVMT (Movement) watches cost?
Movement watches for men range from $95-$300 USD. Women’s varieties range from $95-$165. Of course, that depends on your style and function preferences. Again, if you select a watch from the Minimal Sport collection, the company donates 1% of the profits to the Surfrider Foundation. Keep in mind those are only available for men and range from $125-$145 USD.
About MVMT (Movement)
In recent years, several disruptive companies have popped up in various industries. Those companies seek to disrupt the outdated and overpriced models of commerce. Usually, the products they offer are crowdfunded or direct-to-consumer. That is the case with MVMT watches. In 2013, co-founders Jake Kassan and Kramer Laplante started MVMT in Los Angeles, California to provide customers with a stylish, high quality, and affordable alternative to spending quite a bit of money on a watch. They state on the website that they are inspired by go-getters, innovators, and dreamers. Their watches are “built for adventuring, creating, and daring to disrupt the norm.” They go on to say that “Above all else, we create with the dream of enlivening our ultimate mission: to inspire you to live life on your own terms.” In 2018, the Movado Group purchased the company. One thing is for certain, they know how to market their products and do well with their digital marketing strategies.
What kind of movement does the watch have?
While you may think we have answered this question, the movement we are referring to deals with the accuracy of the watch. In other words, you want to know whether or not it stay true to the passage of time. Keep in mind that this is a “fashion brand” watch. That means it is designed to look stylish and be an accessory to your wardrobe. The company states it uses Japanese Miyota Precision Quartz Movement. That is the same movement that watches like Seiko and Citizen use. However, the MVMT watches are made in China and Hong Kong.
Do MVMT watches come with a warranty?
Yes, a limited one. Every watch you buy from the MVMT website or an authorized dealer has a two-year, limited warranty. It covers any manufacturer’s defects starting on the original purchase date. As long as the defects fall in that category, the company will repair or replace the product for free. However, there are a list of things that the warranty won’t cover. Those include:
- Water damage
- Batteries
- Normal wear and tear
- Accidental glass damage
- Scratches
- Strap damage
- Theft
While the warranty does not cover batteries, the company says they should last at least two years. All brand new products can be returned for a full refund within 60 days. That said, if your domestic or international orders are less than $50, you are responsible for return shipping.
Are MVMT watches waterproof?
Many of the models they offer are. However, not all of them. There are 4 different ratings for water resistance. Those are:
- 3ATM – This stands for 3 atmospheres of pressure. The website states that with this rating, you should avoid all water because water damage is not covered under the warranty as we mentioned.
- 5ATM – With this rating, the watch allows brief periods of submersion like hand washing. Past that, you may encounter water damage.
- 10ATM – With this type of rating, you can go swimming on the surface or go snorkeling. The company considers it to be waterproof.
- 30ATM – If your watch has a 30ATM rating, it is waterproof to 300 meters. You will have no problems going swimming, scuba diving, or anything else.
As you can see, there are several different levels of water resistance, depending on your needs.
Are MVMT watches worth the money?
The answer to this question is subjective. All watches have good and bad points. Many millenials (their target audience) love the fact that the company has a partnership with a non-profit organization for a good social cause. They are just one of the many direct-to-consumer companies that believe in giving back to the community and the planet. Whether or not they are worth the money is up to you. Let’s take a look at some of the pros and cons.
Customer Service
From a customer service standpoint, MVMT is great. They offer two ways to contact them. You have the option of emailing them which can take 24-48 hours, or you can chat with them via the website. While their chat feature does not seem to be instantaneous, it is quick. We found the representative very knowledgeable, friendly, and polite. She was able to answer the questions we had regarding their watches. We have no doubt that if you have questions or issues, the MVMT support team will take care of them with professionalism and courtesy.
Final thoughts on MVMT (Movement) watches
The MVMT company has beautiful designs for their watches, glasses, and jewelry. They do a great job of being stylish and it is clear they really understand their target audience. Additionally, they have a catchy and memorable slogan to help people remember who they are, with the #JoinTheMovement campaign. While some watch aficionados question their quality, their 2018 acquisition by the well-known watchmaker, Movado, can only be a good thing.
On a personal note, I love my MVMT watch. It is the one you see in the images above and I find it to be excellent for my needs. I love the minimalist and uncluttered face as well as the variety of other products the company has to offer. It just shows that you do not have to be a millennial to join the movement.
